January 2022 Riser of the Month

Three years ago, Jess King's world was turned upside down when she was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. Her pain was so severe that she could not pick up her infant out of his crib, let alone her 2 or 3 year-olds, or walk down the stairs without a death grip on the handrail. "After almost a year of suffering, I found the right combination of medications and my symptoms became better controlled," she says. "It was a real eye-opener for me. I decided to never take the ability to move for granted because it could be taken away in an instant."

So, when the Covid lockdown came into play, Jess knew she would have to find ways to stay dedicated to daily movement. When long distance running and doing recorded workouts at home with kids jumping all over her was getting old, she knew she needed a change. "I was dragged into Carin's outdoor bootcamp by some friends and have been hooked ever since," she says.

In addition to being addicted to the after-workout glow, Jess finds the RISE community to be incredible. "The friendships I have formed through RISE are like no other," she says. "I have met some of the most loyal people I have ever known."

As Jess has formed loyal friendships at RISE, she has also found her own loyalty to RISE and her role in its community growing. With a Bachelor's Degree in food science and human nutrition and an even deeper dedication to nutrition developed after her RA diagnosis. "I have been able to get better control of my symptoms and disease with the help of modern medicine in combination with a healthier lifestyle," she says. "This has translated to my clinical practice and I have seen how small changes can have a big impact on my patients' wellness. I hope to share the knowledge I've gained with fellow RISERs on how to make sustainable, healthy food and wellness choices in order to feel their best."

Jess, we love having you as part of the RISE world. You inspire our movement and push us forward everyday. Congrats on being named RISER of the Month! Read on to hear more about Jess and her healthy living goals and tips.

I want to maintain a high fitness level and continue to evolve on my wellness journey. I want to continue to be able to enjoy strenuous activities like hiking and skiing with my family.

What RISE class gets you feeling the most mentally and physically amped?

Katelyn's cardio boxing, but it's hard to choose! Power circuits, outdoor bootcamp and burnout are all a close second!

What’s your biggest challenge in getting to class?

My kids are 7, 5 and 3 and mom-guilt is real.

What’s your athletic background?

Growing up, I was a competitive gymnast and dancer for many years. In high school, I was a cheerleader and swimmer/diver and also played field hockey and tennis. I went on to play varsity tennis at University of Illinois.

What’s your best healthy living tip?

No excuses on the good days. Give yourself grace on the bad days. Love yourself always.
